14 killed in Russian attack near Ukraine’s nuclear plant

Ukraine on Wednesday accused Russia of launching rocket attacks on areas near a nuclear power plant that killed 14 civilians, as the G7 warned that Russian control of the facility “endangers the region.”

Regional governor Valentin Reznichenko wrote on Telegram that overnight attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region of central Ukraine killed 13 people and injured 11, five of whom are said to be in critical condition.

“It was a terrible night,” he said, urging residents to seek shelter as soon as he heard air raid sirens.

“I’m asking and begging you… don’t let the Russians kill you,” he wrote.

A woman was killed when Russian missiles hit a village in the Zaporizhzhya region on Wednesday morning, local governor Alexander Starukh wrote on Telegram.

Most of the casualties were in the town of Marganets, across the Dnipro River from Europe’s largest Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

Regional council chief Mykola Lukashuk said the strike affected local power lines, leaving thousands without electricity.

G7 call on nuclear plant
Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of recent shelling around the plant, which has six reactors.

Ukraine says it has deployed hundreds of troops and stockpiled ammunition since it captured it on March 4, shortly after Russia launched its offensive.

Tensions have revived memories of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Soviet Ukraine, which killed hundreds and spread radioactive contamination across much of Europe.

The Group of Seven Industrialized Nations condemned the Russian occupation and called on Moscow to immediately return full control of the plant.

G7 foreign ministers said in a statement, Ukrainian employees operating the plant should be able to work “without any danger or pressure” and that Russia’s control of the plant “endangers the region”.

The attacks came a day after major explosions hit the Saki airfield, a major military base on the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula.

Moscow insisted that the explosions were caused by a detonation of ammunition rather than Ukrainian fire and that Ukraine has not claimed responsibility.

‘There’s a lot of shooting’
Fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, where Russian troops are slowly advancing.

Regional governor Pavlo Kirilenko said on Telegram that at least six people were killed and three others were injured in the attacks in the city of Bakhmut.

AFP journalists observed that the city of Soledar continued to be under fire as Russian troops attempted to drive out Ukrainian forces and gain a foothold towards Bakhmut.

Cluster bombs and artillery echoes hit apartment buildings and their windows shattered, while streets were potted and shops were razed or destroyed.

The city was covered with black and white smoke emanating from artillery and air raids.

Some of those that are now left live underground in basements unsuitable as bomb shelters.

“Most are gone. It’s so scary. There’s a lot of shooting,” said 62-year-old Svitlana Klymenko.

“I just want to quit getting old the normal way, die a normal death, not be hit by a missile.”

EU ban on Russian coal
The war has severely disrupted grain supplies from Ukraine, leading to an international food crisis as it is one of the world’s largest producers.

Some ships have been able to leave Ukrainian ports in recent days following a deal reached by the United Nations and Turkey with Russia.

Top UN official Frederick Kenney said on Wednesday that the first exports of wheat under the agreement should begin next week.

The first grain shipment aboard the Sierra Leone-flagged vessel Rajoni departed the Ukrainian port of Odessa on August 1 and was expected to dock in the Lebanese port of Tripoli over the weekend.

But the Ukrainian embassy said a new buyer was being sought for the shipment after the original Lebanese buyer canceled the order.

It had found a new buyer for its cargo after reports from maritime traffic sites showed that Rajoni was docked in Turkey’s Mediterranean port of Mersin.

Spain on Wednesday launched a pilot project to import Ukrainian grain by train to avoid blocked sea routes, with a freight train leaving Madrid for the Polish city of Chem late on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Western countries have imposed increasingly tough sanctions on Moscow, raising fears that Russia may cut gas supplies.

EU countries have started to take different measures to save energy, with Spain banning air conditioning from Wednesday and Vienna reducing street lighting.
