15 killed in Russian shelling in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, governor says

The deaths occurred in four separate incidents in the area. In Kharkiv city, five people were killed and 11 were injured, while an eight-year-old child was killed in an attack in the suburbs, in which his mother was also injured.

Governor Oleg Sinegubov said an eight-year-old was among 15 people killed in Russian shelling in the eastern Kharkiv region on Tuesday.

Located in northeastern Ukraine, Kharkiv is an area that borders Russia, where many residents who fled at the start of the invasion have returned after Russian attempts to capture another city in Ukraine.

“Fifteen people were killed and 16 wounded. Russian daytime shelling in the Kharkiv region has such dire consequences,” Sinegubov said on Telegram.

He said there were deaths and injuries in four separate incidents.

He said Russian forces opened fire on Chuguiv, 30 kilometers (18 mi) southeast of the city of Kharkiv, killing six and wounding four.

Another five people died and 11 were injured in Kharkiv city, and an eight-year-old child died in an attack in the suburbs, which also injured his mother.

Three more people died in Jolochiv, a small town 40 kilometers north of the city.

“This is terrorism. These are crimes against humanity that must be punished!” Sinegubov said.

The city of Kharkiv, located just 50 kilometers from the Russian border, was heavily shelled by Moscow’s forces at the start of the offensive, but Ukrainian forces regained control after the fighting, leaving the city badly damaged.

Russian troops have since refocused their efforts to capture the eastern Donbass region, which includes the Donetsk and Lugansk regions southeast of Kharkiv.
