Mariupol was continuously escalated during a siege that ended last week when about 2,500 Ukrainian fighters left a steel plant where they had made their stand. Russian forces had already occupied the rest of the city, where an estimated 100,000 people live out of a population of 450,000, many of them trapped during the siege with little food, water, heat or electricity.

At least 200 bodies were found in the basement of an apartment building in Mariupol, officials said on Tuesday, as Russian forces launched an all-out attack to encircle Ukrainian troops in twin cities bordered by a river in eastern Ukraine. She was – a battle that could determine the success or failure of the main campaign of Moscow in the East.
It’s been three months since President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine. On Tuesday, authorities also reopened the underground subway in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, where thousands of civilians had taken refuge for months under constant bombardment.
The AP news agency quoted Petro Andryshchenko, an adviser to the mayor, as saying that the bodies were decomposing and that the neighbourhood had a foul smell. He did not mention when they were discovered, but the sheer number of victims makes it one of the deadliest known attacks of the war.
