In eastern Ukraine, a rocket crash killed 39 people and injured more than 100 at a railway station used to evacuate civilians, war-torn state authorities said.

Ukraine’s SBU security service said a Russian attack on the city of Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region killed 39 people, including four children.

Ukrainian railway manager Alexander Kamishin said two rockets had hit the station. Previous reports indicate that at least 30 people have been killed.

“This is a deliberate attack on the railway passenger infrastructure and the people of Kramatorsk,” Kamishin said.

During the strike, the station housed thousands of people preparing to evacuate to safer regions, with Russia concentrating its troops on eastern Ukraine, regional governor Pavlo Kirilenko added.

In response to the recent attack on civilians, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described Russia as “an unrestricted evil.”

“They are cynically destroying the civilian population. It is an evil that knows no borders. And if it is not punished, it will never stop,” Zelensky told Instagram.

AFP journalists saw the bodies of at least 20 people at the scene, grouped and lying under plastic sheets next to the station.

Immediately after the attack, blood accumulated on the ground and packed bags were thrown outside the building.

Journalists said that four cars next to the station had been destroyed and a large rocket with the inscription “our children” in Russian was lying next to the main building.

As with previous attacks on civilians in Ukraine, Russia denied any involvement in the missile strike.

“All statements by Kiev’s nationalist regime about Russia’s alleged” rocket attack “on April 8 at the Kramatorsk railway station are a provocation and an absolute untruth,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

EU Council President Charles Michel has accused Russia of “horrific” acts, saying Moscow is cutting off an escape route for civilians.

“It’s appalling to see Russia strike one of the main stations used by civilians to evacuate a region where Russia is stepping up an attack,” Michel wrote on social networking.

“I strongly condemn Russia’s non-selective attack this morning,” EU foreign policy spokesman Joseph Borrell said in a separate tweet.

Kramatorsk was hit by Russian attacks earlier this week, but was otherwise largely protected from the damage suffered by other cities in eastern Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

Ukrainian authorities warned the population in the east of the country to flee to the west immediately before the impending Russian attack.
