Aizawl, Jan 16: With 875 new cases reported in Mizoram on Sunday, the number of people infected with COVID-19 rose to 1,52,255, an increase of 33 over the previous day, a health department official said. .

The one-day positivity rate stood at over 18 per cent, up from 12.94 per cent on Saturday, as fresh infections were detected from 4,824 sample tests, he said. The death toll from two more COVID deaths rose to 570 in Serchhip and Khwajawal districts in the last 24 hours, the official said.

Two patients succumbed to the infection at Aizawl’s Joram Medical College (ZMC). He said at least 151 of the newly infected were children and 69 had recently returned to Mizoram from other parts of the country.

He said that Aizawl district recorded the highest number of 408 cases, followed by Lunglei with 90 and Hanathiyal with 81. Mizoram now has 8,921 active cases, while 477 people have recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,42,764. The recovery rate among COVID-19 patients was 93.76 percent.

The northeastern state has so far conducted 15.79 lakh sample tests for COVID-19, the official said. Till Friday, more than 7.73 lakh people have been vaccinated, out of which about six lakh have received both the vaccines.

At least 5,480 people have received the precautionary dose since January 10, he said.
