A memorandum has been submitted to the Prime Minister against the harassment of minorities in Assam
Guwahati: The All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) on Monday complained in a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that minorities were being “harassed” by the Assam government in the name of arbitrary, electoral and illegal evictions.
Noting that the evictees are now being forced to live in open spaces, the student body sought the intervention of the Prime Minister for their proper rehabilitation by providing land leases and other basic amenities to the displaced people.
AAMSU condemned the brutal force used to evict poor people from their homes during an eviction drive in Gorukhuti in Darang district in September that killed two people.
The union has also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resume the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and complete it within a specified time frame.
AAMSU adviser Ainuddin Ahmed said the memorandum addressed to the prime minister had been handed over to police officers at the protest site in New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
In the memorandum, a copy of which was made available to reporters here, members of the student body complained to the people of Assam, especially the minority community living in the state, and sought the intervention of the Prime Minister to remedy it.
The union claimed that the Assam government had engaged in an arbitrary, electoral and illegal eviction drive by evicting genuine Indian citizens from their homes without rehabilitating them.
Acting on the directions of the Guwahati High Court, the state government on Monday launched another eviction exercise in the Lumding Reserve Forest in Hojai district.
AAMSU said that although a large portion of the minority community has settled on the river banks of the state and used fertile soil over the years, they have suffered from floods and erosion resulting in frequent relocations. Habitable land Subsequent governments have failed to do so while maintaining the constitutional obligation of the government to rehabilitate such displaced persons, AAMSU claimed.

Expressing concern over the alleged attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, the union has requested the Prime Minister to ensure the safety and security of those people through diplomatic channels. Referring to Tripura, the student body hopes that perpetrators of hate crimes should be dealt with severely.
To improve the literacy rate among the minority community, AAMSU appealed to the Prime Minister to establish a new university, a military school and a campus of Aligarh Muslim University in Assam.
