Another worker of the closed Nagaon paper mill dies, toll 105
Another employee of the closed Nagaon Paper Mill died on Monday evening. With this, the death toll of workers rose to 105, most of whom died of poverty, trauma and lack of medical treatment, as two of the state’s paper mills ceased to function, according to the Joint Action Committee of Recognized Unions. (JACRU) said.

According to sources, Koliman Basumatary (57), a resident of Jagiroad in Morigaon district and a worker (finishing house) at Nagaon Paper Mill, was suffering from heart disease.
Due to financial constraints he could not afford any medical treatment.
He suffered a cardiac arrest at his home at around 4 pm on Monday and died. Sources said Colliman, like other employees of the two paper mills, did not get salary for years.
Two mills – Cachar Paper Mill at Panchgram in Hailakandi district and Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad in Morigaon district – have been lying non-functional since October 2015 and March 2017 respectively.

Their employees have not received salary for the last 64 and 62 months respectively.
JACRU President Manabendra Chakraborty on Tuesday said that it is unfortunate that employees of two industrial units are dying one after the other, but the government is not showing any promptness in clearing the dues.
“All the employees of both the industries are waiting for the help of the government. The government should release the dues at the earliest,” Chakraborty said.
