In another case of “misidentification”, a jawan (personnel) of Assam Rifles injured two youths on the evening of Friday, April 1 in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh. The special district comes under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA.
Incidentally, the latest incident comes two days after the Union Home Ministry issued notification repealing AFSPA in some parts of the Northeast. Most of Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh are still under AFSPA, except for large parts of Assam.

The latest incident is reminiscent of the December 2021 incident in which security forces killed more than 15 people in Nagaland’s Oting village in a case of “misidentification”. After the Oting incident, a debate has raged over the enforcement of such a harsh law and the exemptions given to the security forces.
According to local reports regarding the latest incident, two youths of Sasa village in Tirap district were injured when a jawan of Assam Rifles opened fire.
According to Guwahati-based Daily Time, “Assam Rifles personnel opened fire on youths suspected of terrorists. The youths were returning home after fishing.
The report said a senior-rank officer of the Assam Rifles “admitted that the incident was due to his fault” and took responsibility for the treatment of the injured.

He is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital but “Assam Rifles assured that the youth will be taken to Jorhat [in Assam] for advanced treatment”.

The incident came a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted about his government’s decision to reduce the number of areas under AFSPA, citing development efforts and peace agreements initiated by the Narendra Modi government behind the announcement. was claimed.

According to the notification of the Union Home Ministry issued on March 31, the implementation of AFSPA has been extended for a further period of six months (April 1 to September 30) in three districts of Arunachal Pradesh, including Tirap district, where the incident took place. .
The March 31 notification comes after a government-appointed committee reviewed the security situation in the Northeast following the ooting incident.
AFSPA empowers security personnel to perform any operation, including shooting anyone suspected of wrongdoing and making arrests without a warrant.
