Arunachal Pradesh: Immigration figures from China’s border districts are misleading

Six districts in China’s border state of Arunachal Pradesh are under central radar for low-vaccination, especially those districts that have not even registered 50% coverage of the first dose.

State health officials noted that the inaccessible hilly region of the state was not as constrained as estimated. There is a huge gap in understanding ground realities and perceived statistics, they argued, as the relocation from this border area to Itanagar has increased the vaccination campaign in the capital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a review meeting with districts with low vaccination coverage where, in addition to Arunachal Pradesh, three northeastern states – Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya – were under investigation.

Arunachal Pradesh Health Secretary P Parthivan told TOI that of the six districts in the border state where the first dose coverage is less than 50%, near China, from where people working in Itanagar have migrated, the first dose coverage is 130%. Districts with less than 50% coverage are Kra Dadi (19%), Kurung Kume (28%), Kamle (36%), Upper Subansiri (32%), Lower Subansiri (41%) and East Kameng (43%) where Nyishis The main tribe.

“Coverage in the border districts of China is very low in Arunachal Pradesh. Most of those who were not found have now settled in Itanagar and surrounding areas. The population estimates for the districts were based on the 2011 census, ”he added.

Parthivan said the district administration has informed the center about the ground realities and inconsistencies in the assessment of non-vaccinated people. “Arunachal Pradesh is not really lagging behind in terms of first dose coverage,” he added.

The pattern of urban migration has confused health officials not only in Arunachal, but also in Assam, where many migrant workers have moved to other states after receiving the first dose. But within the state of Arunachal Pradesh, the health department is confident of covering the immunized.

Although the first dose coverage in Arunachal was 77%, the same was only 19% in Kra Dadi, which is one of the lowest in the country. According to census estimates, the population of Arunachal Pradesh (above 18 plus) is about 10.09 lakh. The second dose coverage in the state has been 54%.
