Arunachal schools allow students to wear a traditional dress every Monday for classes
As debate intensified among students wearing hijab in educational institutions in Karnataka, private schools in Arunachal Pradesh have decided to make students wear traditional attire.
In the 2022-23 academic session, students – across tribes and communities – will go to their educational institutions every Monday wearing traditional dress.
The decision was taken by the Arunachal Pradesh Private School and Children Welfare Association in a meeting in which representatives of more than 180 schools were present.
“Arunachal has more than 100 tribes and sub-tribes. We have decided that students, including non-tribals, will go to school every Monday in traditional attire. It will be mandatory for all students,” the association’s vice-president Tar Jhoni told this newspaper on Friday.
“Students will have the freedom to wear their traditional attire irrespective of the communities. If there is a trustee, he will wear a trustee dress. The Gallows will wear their traditional dress. Similarly, non-tribals will have the freedom to wear their traditional dress,” Jhoni explained.
He said that the Nyashi Students’ Union had earlier taken up the issue with the state government and a section of parents also wanted it to be implemented.
“Most parents suggested that the students wear their traditional attire once a week. This decision will contribute to the promotion of local culture and tradition,” Jhoni said.

He said that the association would take action against any school that did not follow the resolution.
The association resolved that the students would wear only traditional dress on this day. They will not wear traditional jewelery or carry traditional weapons. The association felt that the introduction of traditional dress would help the local weavers.
Jhoni said that no religion should be seen in the uniform of educational institutions, which have students from all communities.
