Decades-old border disputes between Assam and Meghalaya could be resolved using a “give and take” formula between the two neighboring northeastern states, according to those involved in the ongoing talks.
On Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Bishwa Sharma held talks with various political parties and organizations, including student organizations in the state, to brief them on the progress of both the states in resolving the border issue. Can be done amicably
Ahead of January 21, when Meghalaya is celebrating its 50th founding day, efforts are underway to finalize some agreements soon. The chief ministers of both the states are expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah this week to resolve the issue.
“Our efforts to resolve the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute have been fruitful as 6 out of 12 areas have been identified for early resolution. During an interaction, (I) informed the representatives of all the political parties about the progress so far, “Sarma tweeted on Tuesday.

The areas of difference adopted for the final settlement are Hahim, Gijang, Tarabari, Bokalapara, Khanapara-Pilingkata and Ratchera.
Since last year, talks have been underway between the two states at the chief ministerial level to end the border dispute and it has been decided that six of the 12 disputed areas will be addressed in the first phase. Recently, the regional committees of both the states submitted their reports in these six cases.
While Sarma expressed confidence in a speedy solution, opposition parties in Assam, including the Congress, have said that further discussions are needed at a broader level for a solution.
“During the meeting on Tuesday, we were told that the two states had agreed on an acceptance and acceptance formula for resolving disputes in six sectors. As part of that, Assam will get 18.51 sq km and Meghalaya 18.29 sq km, ”said Mohammad Aminul Islam, Organizing Secretary and MLA of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), who attended the meeting on Tuesday.

“Boundary disputes between states cannot be resolved at the level of the Chief Minister. It should be centered. Meghalaya has been occupying our land for years. Instead of a quick solution, we want the matter to be discussed in the state assembly and a resolution passed and sent to the Center.

Congress MLA and Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Debabrata Saikia also said that both the states have agreed on a “take and accept” formula for resolving disputes.
“We do not agree with the proposal because the matter needs to be discussed in detail in the state assembly. As this is a serious matter, I urge the state government to convene an assembly session to discuss it.
Akhil Gogoi, president of the RJD party and Shivsagar MLA, who missed the meeting after a positive test for COVID-19, issued a statement opposing the transfer of Assam’s land to Meghalaya and urged CM Sarma to protect the state’s borders. “The boundaries of all the states are defined by the constitution and the chief ministers of the two states cannot decide to rebuild those boundaries through a meeting. Any hasty decision on this issue could be detrimental to the interests of Assam. I urge the Chief Minister of Assam to take the people of the state into confidence before any solution is found, “Gogoi said in a statement.
