Assam-Mizoram border bomb blast Police arrest
Six members of the Assam Police were killed and more than 50 were injured in violence on the Mizoram border on July 26.
GUWAHATI: A high-intensity bomb exploded at a border outpost on the Assam-Mizoram border, sparking tensions between the two states in the wake of the July 26 violence that killed six Assam police personnel.
The blast took place in Hailakandi district of south Assam. Assam Police said the Indian Reserve Battalion Force of Mizoram Police had arrested Kordex from the area along with the wire which was used to detonate bombs from a distance.
“In the dark, around 1:45 pm, it was reported that there was a high-explosive blast using explosive cord near Baichera BOP under Ramnathpur PS, which was done by some Mizo miscreants,” an Assam police official told NDTV.
Police said the arrested workers have been identified as Laldinantluanga, 23, a resident of Bairabi in Kolasib, Mizoram, which shares a border with Kachar and Hailakandi districts of Assam.
Hailakandi Superintendent of Police Gaurav Upadhyay said, “He has been arrested and remanded in judicial custody,” adding that police are investigating the matter.
The Bairabi branch of the student organization Mizo Jirlai Paul has issued a notice that if the arrested workers are not released by 4 pm today, they will stop all vehicles in Assam from entering Bairabi’s Jofai. “Police personnel waited at the Ramnatpur police station all night but failed to take him back,” the organization said.
The Barak Valley region of Assam shares a 165 km border with three districts – Hailakandi, Karimganj and Kachar – Mizoram. There are border disputes between the two states on at least five points.

In the latest cross-border fire on July 26, six Assam police personnel were killed and more than 50 were injured. Assam police allege that people from Mizoram attacked them by throwing stones. The Mizoram government, on the other hand, said the state police responded after Assam police officers “forcibly crossed” a post run by the Central Reserve Police Force.
Tensions between the two states were brought under control soon after the Centre’s move.
