Assam Model Rajkanya Barua Arrested For Injuring 9 People

She was granted bail after she was beaten up by highway workers with her car on October 2.

Assam Police on Wednesday arrested a former Miss India finalist, who was granted bail within 24 hours of thrashing 9 people together with her car in Guwahati on October 2.

A senior police officer mentioned that a case has been registered against Rajkanya Barua under section 308 of the Indian Penal Code for attempt to murder. The punishment under this part is imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years, or with fine, or with both.

The 29-year-old model was arrested minutes after a medical board of the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital found her healthy. Shi was examined within the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital after being summoned by the police on Tuesday, citing ill health.

“The medical board said that shi is match to appear before the investigating officer and does not require hospitalisation,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Subhrajit Bora told reporters.

Ms Barua thrashed eight road workers whereas driving under the influence of alcohol at around 2 pm on October 2, in violation of the night time curfew due to the COVID-19 scenario. She also ran over the bottom of the ninth man, identified as Joseph, whose legs had to be amputated.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered a re-investigation of the case as there was outrage throughout Assam after his bail. Two sub-inspectors were “locked” within the police reserve for letting him get away lightly on bailable charges.

Police said Ms Barua had a relationship with the law in the past. Two FIRs have been registered against her for thrashing a former MLA’s son with her car over a quarrel in 2017 and fighting with on-duty cops in front of a pub in 2018.

In 2015, she had spent a night at the Latasil police station for allegedly breaking liquor bottles near the Raj Bhavan.
