Assam ready to do anything to resolve border dispute
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma gave a ray of hope with regard to resolving the decades-long border dispute between Assam and Arunachal and said that Assam will do something to resolve the disputes to maintain brotherhood with Arunachal Pradesh. ready to do as well.
Sarma made this assurance in his speech at the Yupiah Stadium on Sunday on the occasion of the 36th State Foundation Day celebrations of Arunachal, to which he was invited as the chief guest.
“I want to assure the people of Arunachal Pradesh that the Assam government is ready to take all possible steps to amicably resolve the border dispute to maintain brotherhood with Arunachal,” Sarma said.
The Assam-Arunachal border dispute remains a hot issue as border clashes have been escalating over the years.
Assam CM informed that Assam and Meghalaya recently resolved their disputes in six inter-state border areas peacefully through talks.
“We (Assam and Meghalaya government) recently settled six disputed sites peacefully. I am also in constant talks with Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu to resolve the dispute peacefully under the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
He pointed out that, from April 2022, the two governments would engage in a series of dialogues, and most border disputes between Assam and Arunachal would be resolved within this year.
“I would like to emphasize that from the month of April, we will engage in a series of dialogues and within this year, the Assam-Arunachal maximum boundary disputes will be resolved amicably,” he said.

Sarma also acknowledged the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in resolving the inter-state border issues.

“Today, we are fortunate that we have leaders like Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Whenever the PM meets us, he constantly asks why there are interstate issues, and asked to resolve it,” Sarma said.
“We have to resolve the internal issue to maintain the brotherhood and work unitedly to transform the Northeast region into India’s economic engine,” he said.
Sarma’s friendly hand in resolving border issues came after the two chief ministers agreed to settle disputes at the earliest in a meeting held in Guwahati on January 24, 2022.
Sarma also highlighted the cultural and literary ties between the two states, “which were bridged through their literary works and arts such as Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Padmashree YD Thongchi and the renowned author Late Lumer Dai.”
