Assam Rifles seizes cigarettes of foreign origin worth Rs 67.6 lakh in Mizoram
In yet another success in their operation against smuggling activities, soldiers of Assam Rifles stationed in Mizoram recovered foreign origin cigarettes worth Rs 67.60 lakh at Hanahlan in Champhai district.
On Tuesday, smuggled foreign origin cigarettes were recovered by the Aizawl Battalion of Headquarters 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (East).
Headquarters IGAR (East) in a statement said that during the operation, the Assam Rifles soldiers belonging to Aizawl Battalion recovered 52 cases of cigarettes of foreign origin.
“Based on specific information, 2 Assam Rifles carried out the operation,” the statement said.
The estimated value of the seized foreign-origin cigarettes is Rs 67,60,000, the headquarter IGAR (East) reported.
The customs department in Champhai on Tuesday confiscated the banned items for further legal proceedings.
“The smuggling of cigarettes of foreign origin is a major cause of concern for the state of Mizoram, especially along the Indo-Myanmar border,” the Assam Rifles said.
“Assam Rifles, aptly named as ‘Sentinel of the Northeast’, continues its efforts against smuggling activities in Mizoram,” it added.
