Assam Rifles seizes Rs 17 crore worth of brown sugar in Tengnoupal

Both Assam Rifles and Manipur police conducted a search operation at the Moreh Friendship Bridge in the district and seized 8.60kg of brown sugar.

Assam Rifles, together with the Manipur Police, seized a huge contraband of brown sugar worth Rs 17.20 crore in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur on Tuesday.

Both Assam Rifles and Manipur police carried out a search operation at the Moreh Friendship Bridge in the district and seized 8.60kg of brown sugar.

“ASSAM RIFLES CROSS-BORDER SMUGGLING OF NARCOTICS FLOWS #AssamRifles, on 23 August, in a joint operation with Manipur police, thwarted cross-border narcotics smuggling and recovered 8.60kg of brown sugar worth Rs 17.20 Crores at Friendship Bridge, Moreh, Tengnoupal Dist, Manipur,” Assam Rifles tweeted.

After the seizure, the recovered items were handed over to the Moreh police for further investigation.

In July this year, brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore was seized and one person was arrested in the Hojai district of Assam.

Following a tip, police reportedly seized 983g of brown sugar from a house in the South Hill suburb of Lumding in the district.

The arrested person was identified as Deabash Hore, who allegedly brought the drugs from Dimapur to Hojai by train for the purpose of selling them.

In addition to this, the Government Railway Police (GRP) also seized Rs 1.4 million worth of opium and also arrested two people from Bihar in connection with the seizure.

The trapped people were identified as Abhyas Kumar and Sunil Kumar after they were seen suspiciously at the Guwahati railway station.

Searching them, the GRP recovered more than 2 kilograms of opium from their underwear.
