Blast in Pakistan bank branch at least 15 killed
A petrol station near the bank in the Indus Industrial Trading Estate and nearby parked cars were badly damaged.
At least 15 people were killed and 18 others injured in a blast at a bank branch in Karachi’s industrial area on Saturday.
A senior police official said the blast at a branch of Habib Bank Limited, Pakistan’s largest lender, may have been caused by a gas leak, Sarfaraz Nawaz told reporters, adding that the building was built on a sewer drain.
“Our explosives teams are working to determine the type of explosion, but apparently the structure was built on a creek and gas could be a possible cause,” he said.
Habib Bank said in a statement on Twitter that an explosion had damaged its branch and caused casualties.
“Our thoughts are with the bereaved family,” he said.
A petrol station near the bank in the Indus Industrial Trading Estate and nearby parked cars were badly damaged. Television footage showed a torn, curved iron rod on the bank floor.

“So far 15 people have been killed and 16 injured have been taken to hospital,” Karachi administrator Murtaza Wahab said in a tweet.
Another senior police official, Sharjeel Kharal, told reporters that it was not immediately clear how many people were killed or injured in the blast as there were skeletons of bank employees on Saturday.
