Britain announces 1 billion Pounds military aid to Ukraine

Downing Street said in a statement that the fresh funding would bring Britain’s total military support to Kiev to £2.3 billion since the war began in late February.

Britain on Wednesday pledged another £1 billion ($1.2 billion) in military aid to Ukraine to help it fend off Russian aggression, including air defense systems and drones.

It said the package included “sophisticated air-defence systems, uncrewed aircraft, innovative new electronic warfare equipment and thousands of pieces of vital kit for Ukrainian soldiers”.

This would be a “first step” to allow Ukraine to move beyond its “courageous defense” efforts towards “scaling up offensive operations” to regain territory.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Vladimir Putin’s offensive against Ukraine had become increasingly barbaric, as the Russian leader “failed to achieve the gains he expected and hoped for and the futility of this war is clear to everyone.”

“Britain’s weapons and training have transformed Ukraine’s defenses against this attack,” the statement quoted him as saying.

“And we will continue to stand squarely behind the Ukrainian people to ensure that Putin fails in Ukraine.”

Britain was one of the first countries to provide lethal military aid to Ukraine, such as anti-tank missiles, in response to the Russian aggression. He has also been involved in training Ukrainian soldiers.
