Cachar brick kiln’s chimney blast kills 5, investigation underway
Two workers from Bihar, two children and a mosque imam were killed, while many others were injured in an explosion at a brick kiln chimney in Qachar district on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred in his Lakhipur district in Cachar district.
The brick kiln owner, identified as Altaf Hussein, was away during the magistrate’s visit during the day, sources said.
Local residents said the explosion occurred at 4 pm on Friday after the imam of the local mosque added fire to start the kiln, followed by prayers. The chimney of the brick kiln was also damaged by the blast.
Locals immediately engaged in rescue efforts. Firefighters also arrived on the scene and put out the blaze.
Devi said arrangements had been made by the district administration to send the bodies of two workers from Bihar to their homes by ambulance on Sunday.
Two people died on the spot and three died from injuries at Silcher Medical College Hospital (SMCH) on Friday night, a senior official said. Three of the five injured being treated at SMCH are in critical condition. Three patients will be transferred to Guwahati on Sunday for better treatment, SMCH sources said.

Circle officer (Katigorah) Minarbha Debi visited the area on Saturday to investigate the incident. She talked to locals and brick kiln workers. The magistrate said she would prepare a report and submit it to her Deputy Commissioner Cachar within a few days.
According to SP (Cachar) Numal Mahatta, the victim was first sent to Kalain government hospital and later he was referred to SMCH.
Katigorah MLA Khalil Uddin Mazumder also visited the site soon after the tragedy and later to the local hospital to learn about the condition of the injured.
