CM Conrad Sangma inaugurates Ganol hydropower project
TURA: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the much-anticipated 22.5 MW Gonal Hydropower Project near Tura in the West Garo Hills in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tingsong and Health Minister James Sangma.
Describing the inauguration of the project as ‘historic’ and a historic day for the Garo Hills, the Meghalaya Chief Minister said the project worth over Rs 560 crore has been completed with the promise of the present government, which has put the Garo Hills on the electricity map. Its purpose was to bring Nations.
He commended James Changma for raising the idea of reviving and completing the abandoned project during his tenure as Energy Minister.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister said the government had decided to release additional funds to complete the project on the advice of James Changma.
The Ganol project was almost abandoned, invested by the Meghalaya government but not completed due to lack of funds. When the current government took over in 2018, it ensured funds were available to restart the project,” he said.

He said by completing the project, the Meghalaya government has demonstrated to the people of the Garo Hills that “this government has the desire to ensure major infrastructure projects for the common good of the state and its people”.

He said the project will help in supplementing the energy needs of the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya.
He said more such projects would be needed and the government was committed to come up with such large infrastructure projects in the future.
Meghalaya currently requires about 380 MW of power.
The Ganol Hydroelectric Project utilized the Ganol River catchment near Tura and its waters to install 3 turbine – generator units of 7.5 MW each, one of which is commissioned today and the other two will be commissioned in the next few months.
