Demonstrations have started in Tripura in protest of the attack on a Buddhist monastery in Bangladesh
Indigenous groups have demanded that those involved in the attack on the Katakhali Forest Buddhist Monastery and the attack on at least eight members of the Chakma community be brought to justice.
Members of five tribal organizations in Tripura staged a protest in front of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission here on Monday, condemning the attack and arson at the Katakhali Forest Buddhist Monastery in Teknaf in neighboring Cox’s Bazar district.
A joint statement from five tribal organizations said on Monday that at least six tribals, including women from the Chakma community, had been injured in the October 24 attack.
These organizations submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina through Assistant High Commissioner Mohammad Jobaid Hossain.
The memorandum said that after the vandalism and arson of Hindu temples, Durga Puja pandals and attacks on Hindu minorities from October 13, attacks on Katakhali forest Buddhist monastery took place, which shows that the Bangladesh government did not take any action. Measures to ensure the protection of the country’s religious minorities.
“The reason is that the Bangladesh government has so far failed to punish those who destroyed 19 Buddhist temples and about 100 houses in Ramu, Cox’s Bazar and Patia in Chittagong in 2012,” the memorandum said.
These organizations said in a statement: “The Government of Bangladesh has a responsibility to protect the lives, property and religious rights of religious minorities.”
Indigenous groups have called for the perpetrators of the attack on the Katakhali Forest Buddhist monastery to be brought to justice and for at least eight Chakmas to be brought to justice, as well as for the destruction of 19 Buddhist temples and about 100 houses in Ramu, Cox. In 2012 through fast track courts in Chittagong Bazar and Patiya.

Tribal organizations that protested on Monday included the Chakma National Council of India, the Chakma Buddhist Welfare Society, the Young Chakma Association, the Tripura Chakma Students Association and the Tripura Reggio Chakma Gabucha Joda.
