Dream turned into nightmare as Russian bombings started: Tripura student
For Meghna Trivedi, the dream that had come true – getting a chance to study medicine at Ukraine’s prestigious Vinnitsa National Purogov Memorial Medical University – turned into a nightmare as Russia invaded the tiny European nation. The fourth year MBBS student of Belonia subdivision of South Tripura along with two fellow students also hailing from Tripura, landed safely at MBBS airport from Romania via Delhi on Thursday. The journey from Vinnytsia in Ukraine was a long and painful one for Meghna and two fellow students from the northeastern state of Tripura.
“I never thought I would have such horrific experiences in Ukraine – missiles landing on the streets, troop movements and (injured) people screaming”, she said.
Meghna said that things were good until Russian troops attacked Ukraine. “Due to the worsening of the situation with the frequent bombings, we were forced to take shelter in the bunkers on February 24,” she said.
The daily essentials they had with them began to deplete rapidly. “The next day, some Indian students decided to cross the border and enter Romania by any means,” Meghna said.

“The hardest time in my life was when we had to travel 10 kilometers in hostile conditions to cross through war-torn Ukraine to Romania,” the young medical student said.
“In Romania, we were offered a pleasant welcome and we stayed there for three days. The Indian embassy and local authority did their best to meet our needs as much as possible”, said Meghna’s classmate Jasmine Debbrama, who was three is one of the students. From Tripura who had returned from Romania via Delhi.
Describing her war experience in Ukraine, Jasmine said, “Life in a bunker in Ukraine was miserable. Every building in the war-ravaged country has bunkers, which were unknown to us until the war started. Each bunker had 150 to 300 people.” accommodation facilities.”
Ukraine along with several other Russian provinces built bunkers during the Soviet era when the Cold War between the two superpowers – the USSR and the USA – raised fears of another global war.

She described the Ukrainian as “very polite and gentle”.
“I wanted to study medicine abroad. Finally I got a chance in Ukraine. Now, I am not sure whether I will be able to complete MBBS course there or not”, said Jasmine from Abhynagar, Agartala.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb welcomed the students to their home state, lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for speedy evacuation of Indian students stranded in crisis-hit Ukraine.
“We do not have the exact number of students belonging to the state stranded in Ukraine because of the war. I hope that the Central Government will take all possible steps to ensure the safe return of our students at the earliest.
