Drone delivers vaccine in Manipur-India first to do in Southeast Asia

The nation’s high medical establishment ICMR successfully transported jabs from Bishnupur in Manipur to Karang Island by way of Loktak Lake.

New Delhi: A drone delivered vaccines to people living in Manipur’s ‘floating islands’ in Loktak Lake, making India the first nation in Southeast Asia to ship vaccines in an unmanned airplane. The ‘Floating Islands’ are pieces of hard algae floating in a freshwater lake in Moirang district of Manipur.
The nation’s apex medical establishment ICMR successfully transported jabs from Bishnupur in Manipur to Karang Island by way of Loktak Lake. Officials plan to ship vaccines to 2 more districts of Manipur with drones within the coming days.

Officers informed that the totally ‘Made-in-India’ drone took off in automatic mode from Bishnupur district hospital and reached Karang health center in 15 minutes, about 31 km away. The journey by road is about 4 hours long.

Addressed ICMR’s initiative for ‘Drone Based Vaccine Supply System’ in Northeast India. Vaccines were carried from Bishnupur District Hospital to Karang Health Centre, Loktak Lake, Manipur, covering a distance of 31 km in 15 minutes. This distance normally takes 3.-4 hours,” tweeted Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

The minister said that drone technology will speed up the last mile delivery of health supplies. “With the transportation of vaccines, drone technology will speed up last mile healthcare supplies and expand the scope of life-saving and emergency medicine provides,” he tweeted.

“Vaccines have been distributed today. Tomorrow, life saving medicines will be delivered by drones in vital medical situation. This may result in spraying of pesticides and urea,” stated Mr. Mandaviya.

The Karang area of Manipur, with a population of about 3,500 people, has totally immunized 30% of its population. The Health Minister stated, “Despite all of the difficulties under the vaccination campaign, India will quickly contact the 100 crore vaccination milestone. Now we’re utilizing technology to ease the difficult roads.”
