Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated a new district of “Eastern West Khasi Hills“, which was separated from his parent district of West Khasi Hills. Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lindoh and other cabinet ministers and legislators were also present on the occasion.
The 12th district of the state consists of Moirang and Maothadaraishan C&RD blocks. Marang Hall is one of the oldest civic subdivisions, inaugurated on November 10, 1976, and transformed into a new district 45 years later. Myrang will be the headquarters of the new district.
After inaugurating the East-West Khasi Hill District in a festive atmosphere at Myrang, the Chief Minister said that the new district administration would bring the people closer, adding that it was a long-standing aspiration and aspiration of the people, and the government had to consider. “The new district was not created because it is in the Khasi Hills or the Jaintia Hills or the Garo Hills, but it was created entirely on the basis of certain parameters, which put the region at the bottom of the list of development activities. Sangma further said at the rally that whenever he inaugurated any development project as the chief minister, there was always dissatisfaction in some parts of the state. They have been described as “selected” and “priority” in conducting development activities, he said.
“I tell you that this MDA government does not discriminate on the basis of tribe, caste, religion or creed. We do not discriminate between Khasi, Garo or Jaintia hills … Wherever there is a need for development, we decide on development activities.” Chief Minister.
Elaborating on the naming of the new district, the Chief Minister said that several suggestions were made and views were sought from various people.

“We are a matriarchal society. So, we felt that some link with the main district should be included. Therefore, the cabinet felt that this area falls on the east side of West Khasi Hills, so we should call it East West Khasi. The hill should be named,” “He added.
Speaking on the occasion, Speaker Lindoh, who is also a local MLA, said it was a historic day for the people of the area.
