Stop playing ‘with Russia, end the war: Zelenskyy tells the West

To end the “ridiculous war” in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the West to end its friendship with Russia and impose tough sanctions on Moscow, saying the only question was whether his country would remain independent.

Three months after the invasion of Ukraine, Russia abandoned its invasion of the capital, Kiev, in a bid to consolidate control of the eastern Donbass industrial zone, which has supported a separatist uprising since 2001.

Western military analysts see the war in Siviarodnesk and Licheink as a possible turning point in the war, with a shift in direction towards Russia following the handover of Ukrainian troops in Mariupol last week.

Zelensky’s criticism of the West has grown in recent days as the European Union slowly moves toward a possible Russian oil embargo and thousands of Russian troops try to encircle the two main eastern cities of Siviarodonetsk and Lichunch.

Ukraine will always be an independent country and it will not disappear. The only question is how much our people will pay for their independence and how much Russia will pay for this ridiculous war against us,” he said. Zelensky in his late-night speech on Thursday.

The EU is considering a sixth round of sanctions, including a ban on Russian oil imports. Such a move would require a unanimous vote, but Hungary opposes the idea that the economy would suffer too much.

“How many more weeks will the EU try to agree on a sixth package?” Zelensky asked, noting that Russia receives one billion euros a day to supply energy from a bloc of 227 countries.

“If the world were to face a similar situation in Ukraine, if the world did not make a fuss with Russia but was really pushing for an end to the war, the catastrophic events that were taking place could still be stopped.”

Zelensky’s remarks marked the second day in a row that he had sharpened criticism of the world’s attitude toward war.

On Wednesday, he rejected suggestions that Kyiv would make concessions to bring peace, an idea opposed to the 1938 attempt to appease Nazi Germany.

The Ukrainian military says Russian troops launched a three-pronged offensive on Thursday in an attempt to encircle Ukrainian troops in Siviarodonetsk and Licheink.

If the two cities crossing the Sivarsky River Donets collapse, almost all of the Donbass region of Luhansk will be under Russian control.

Zelensky blamed differences in the European Union for further sanctions against Russia and asked why some countries were allowed to block the plan.

“Pressure on Russia is literally a matter of saving lives. The offer to ‘calm down’ the aggressors with daily delays, weaknesses, conflicts or casualties means killing more Ukrainians.”

Luhansk Governor Serihai Gaidai said about 50 Russian troops had arrived on the highway and “successfully marched”, even setting up checkpoints.

“The checkpoint was violated, they were left behind … The Russian army is no longer in control of the road, but they are firing,” he said. It is possible that the Ukrainian army “left one settlement, maybe two. We must win the war, not the war,” he said.

“It’s clear that our boys are slowly returning to a more inaccessible position-we have to deal with this group.”
“Twenty-five Russian battalions are trying to encircle the Ukrainian army,” said Vedim Denisenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.

Reuters reporters in Russian-occupied territory saw evidence of Moscow’s advance in Svetlodarsk earlier this week, with Ukrainian troops retreating.

The town is now heavily controlled by pro-Russian fighters, who have occupied local government buildings and hung Soviet hammers and sickle flags at the gates.

Drone footage of an abandoned battlefield near Reuters shows an impressive hole in a green field surrounded by damaged buildings. Pro-Russian fighters are roaming the trenches.

The advance of the Donbass was supported by extensive artillery bombardment. The Ukrainian military says 50 cities in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions were attacked on Thursday.

The head of Ukraine’s armed forces, Valery Jaluzhny, called on the Telegram to acquire more Western weapons, especially “weapons that allow our enemies to attack at long range.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later warned that any arms supply that could reach Russian territory would be “a serious step towards unacceptable growth.”
