But how much is the correct amount that the body needs? Research from the New University of Otago, Christchurch, New Zealand, has for the first time identified how much extra vitamin C humans need to take in, relative to their body weight, to maximize their immune health.

Vitamin C is considered essential for good immune function and works by helping white blood cells fight infection.

The study, published in the international journal Nutrients, found that for every 10kg of extra weight a person gains, their body needs an additional 10mg of vitamin C per day, which will help optimize their immune health.

“Previous studies have already linked higher body weight to lower levels of vitamin C,” said lead author Associate Professor Anitra Carr, from the University’s Department of Pathology and Biomedical Sciences.

“But this is the first study to estimate how much extra vitamin C people really need, relative to their body weight, to help maximize their health.”

Carr suggested that the findings could help better protect heavier people from such diseases, since obesity is a known risk factor for COVID. Obese people may also be at higher risk of serious illness from infection.

Therefore, the results of this study suggest that increasing your intake of vitamin C may be a sensible response if you are overweight, Carr said.

Another major complication of COVID-19 is pneumonia. Vitamin C deficiency is found in patients with pneumonia.
