Known as Major Stefan Tarabalka, the “Ghost of Kyiv” gained worldwide fame after shooting down 10 Russian planes on the first day of the war.

A Ukrainian fighter pilot, known as the “Ghost of Kyiv”, was killed in a battle last month after shooting down 40 Russian planes, the Times of London reported.

The publication also identified the brave pilot as a war hero with a 29-year-old father, Major Stephen Tarabalka.

The UK newspaper also said that the MiG-29 flying Tarabalka was shot down on 13 March while battling “heavy” numbers of enemy forces.

According to the Times, Major Tarabalka was born in a small village named Korolyvka to a working-class family in western Ukraine and wanted to become a pilot since childhood.

With the revelation of his identity, the “Ghost of Kyiv” may have been an urban legend, the report has been punctuated. Their bravery served as a massive morale boost for the Ukrainian Army in the face of overwhelming odds.



According to his family quoted by the Times, the fighter pilot was posthumously awarded Ukraine’s top medal for bravery in combat, the Order of the Golden Star. He was also awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.

According to the Times, his helmet and goggles are now to be auctioned in London.

Tarabalka gained worldwide fame after shooting down 10 Russian planes on the first day of the invasion. “People call him the ghost of Kyiv. And rightly so,” the Ukrainian government said in a tweet last month.



Major Tarabalka’s parents were quoted by the Times as saying that the Ukrainian military had given them no information about his final flight or death. “We know he was flying on a mission, and he Mission accomplished. Then he didn’t return. That’s all we have information about.”
