
Goods worth crores were burnt in the fierce fire in Dibrugarh town
A massive fire broke out in a market area in Assam’s Dibrugarh town in the early hours of Wednesday, in which more than 20 shops were burnt to ashes.
Most of the shops selling clothes were completely damaged but no casualties were reported. The fire also spread to shops and godowns of a multi-storey building in New Market area.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Biswajit Pegu told Eastmojo that property and goods worth more than a few crores were destroyed in the fire.

“Preliminary reports indicate that a short-circuit caused the fire in one of the shops.”
Pegu appealed to the residents and shopkeepers that to prevent such incidents and save their property and neighbourhood, everyone should get the electricity audit done from time to time.
“It is a collective responsibility and one should go for fire insurance to get compensation in case of such devastating fires,” Pegu said.
“If there is anything worrisome that residents come across, they should come forward and inform the district administration so that necessary steps can be taken within time,” the police officer said.

A shopkeeper, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Assam’s biggest festival, Bihu, has knocked on the door and all the shopkeepers in the area have picked up huge quantity and variety of stocks to meet the needs of the customers.
“Everything has turned to ashes. We don’t know how we will cope with the huge loss that lies before us.”

Apart from clothing shops, electronics, optical and footwear shops were also completely gutted in the fire.
More than a dozen fire tenders of State Fire Services, Oil India Limited, Air Force (Chabua), BCPL fought for several hours before the fire was brought under control.
