Heaviest fighting continues in eastern Ukraine
The Ukrainian military said on Thursday that Russia had withdrawn some troops from the town across the Dnipro from the city of Kherson. This is the first official Ukrainian report of a Russian withdrawal from what is now a major front line in the south.
Ukrainian officials also said Russian forces had stepped up artillery fire across the river and turned power back on in Kherson, where power was just beginning to be restored almost three weeks after the Russians fled the city and fled across the river. He emphasized that he had knocked out again.
The statement gave only limited details and did not mention the crossing of the Dnipro River by Ukrainian forces.

Since Russia abandoned Kherson last month, nine months after his invasion of Ukraine, the river now forms the entire southern side of the front.
Russia has already told civilians to evacuate towns within 15 km of her from the river and withdrew civilian administration from the city of Nova Her Kachovska on the riverbank. Ukrainian officials have previously said Russia had retreated artillery near the river to a safer position, but so far they have not said that Russian troops are withdrawing from the town.
Most of the Russian forces in the area were recently mobilized reservists, suggesting that Moscow’s best-trained and specialized units had already left the area.
Reuters could not independently confirm the report.
Separately, Ukraine stepped up security for diplomatic missions around the world after a mail bomb exploded at its embassy in Madrid on Thursday.
Ambassador Serhii Pohoreltsev told Ukrainian news site European Pravda that a suspected package addressed to him was opened outside the building by a Ukrainian commander of the embassy who was injured in the explosion.
“In the Oreshky settlement we see a reduction in the number of Russian soldiers and military equipment,” the military said, referring to the town opposite the city of Kherson on the other side of the destroyed bridge over the Dnipro.
“The enemy forces withdrew from certain settlements in the Kherson province and scattered in the forest belt along the section of the Oreshky-Khorapristan highway,” said his 25 km (15 mi) route through scattered riverside towns. It said, referring to the road of In the forest on the opposite bank of Kherson.
“After opening the box and hearing a click, he threw it and heard an explosion,” he said. “The commander injured his hand and got a concussion even though he wasn’t holding the box when it exploded.”
The Ukraine war is entering a relentless new phase with the onset of the first winter since Russia’s February 24th invasion.
After withdrawing in the south in November, Moscow concentrated its firepower on parts of its eastern front line near the city of Bakhmut. Hundreds of soldiers are believed to be dying a day there in some of the bloodiest battles of the conflict. Both reported the acquisition of territories.
Ukrainian forces have reported heavy shelling of many frontline cities in the region.
