11 members of newly formed militant organization arrested in Meghalaya
The self-styled president of the organization Achik National Socialist Council, Chekam Ch Sangma, has been arrested from Hawakhana area of the district, police stated on Friday.
Tura: 11 members of a newly formed militant organization have been arrested from West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
Chekam Ch Sangma, the self-styled president of the organization named Achik National Socialist Council, has been arrested from Hawakhana area of the district, police stated on Friday.
Superintendent of Police Vivekananda Singh stated in a statement, “Chekham was apprehended from Hawakhana on September 25… He revealed during interrogation that he had formed a new group with 25-30 like-minded people.”
The SP stated that 10 others had been arrested in the last few days and two weapons and a pistol had been seized from their possession.
Singh stated the group was apparently within the process of collecting weapons to launch its operation with actions like kidnapping, extortion.
“They had been in the process of getting training as soon as they acquired sufficient weapons. The SP stated {that a} case has been registered on this regard and the matter is being investigated.
Many of these arrested were earlier linked to varied terrorist teams within the Garo Hills hill area (consisting of 5 districts in western Meghalaya).
