Earlier in the day, under pressure, the government reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by a record Rs 5 and Rs 10 per liter to help reduce rates from their highest levels.
The reduction in excise duty is effective from November 4 when the price of petrol in Delhi will come down from Rs 110.04 to Rs 105.04 per liter. The price of diesel will be reduced from Rs 98.42 per liter to Rs 88.42.
“The Government of India has taken an important decision to reduce the central excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 (per liter) from tomorrow. Petrol and diesel prices will be reduced accordingly,” the finance ministry said. Statement
This is the highest ever reduction in excise duty and a portion of the Rs 13 and Rs 16 per liter tax on petrol and diesel between March 2020 and May 2020 to avoid a sharp fall in international oil to consumers. Price
