The Indian Army and Assam Rifles are engaged in the rescue operation, the Defense Public Relations Office said in a statement. On-site engineering equipment has also been deployed in the rescue operation, the statement said.

At least ten people were killed and more than 50 others went missing after a massive landslide struck a camp of the 107th Territorial Army in Manipur’s Noni district on Thursday morning.

Sources said seven of the deceased were TA personnel and one was a railway employee engaged in the construction of the Imphal-Jiribam railway project.

The TA was deployed to guard the railway line under construction near Tupul railway station in Nani district




The Indian Army and Assam Rifles are engaged in the rescue operation, the Defense Public Relations Office said in a statement. On-site engineering equipment has also been deployed in the rescue operation, the statement said.

According to Noni’s deputy commissioner, large debris has blocked the Ejai river, creating a reservoir that can submerge low-lying areas.

An advisory issued by the deputy commissioner said: “Due to the unfortunate landslide at the Tupul Yard railway construction camp, where casualties have been reported and dozens of people buried alive, the flow of the river has also formed obstruction due to debris. -such as the reservation status, which if breached would wreak havoc in the low lying areas of Noni District Headquarters…”

As of 5.30 am, 13 people were rescued and are undergoing treatment at the Noni Army Medical Unit, the statement said. Fresh landslides and inclement weather hampered rescue efforts, however, with more than 50 people still missing.

Army helicopters are on standby, waiting for the weather to clear, a defense statement said.




A large number of National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force personnel have also been deployed for the operation, assisted by state police and district officers.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh visited the landslide area to take stock of the rescue operation.

Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Minister and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav about the incident.
Shah said an NDRF team had reached the landslide site and two more teams were on their way.

“Spoke to Chief Minister Shri @NBirenSingh & Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw following landslide near Tupul railway station in Manipur. The rescue operation is in full swing.

The NDRF team has already arrived at the scene and is involved in rescue operations. 2 more teams are going to Tupul,” he tweeted.

Biren has called an emergency meeting today to assess the landslide situation in Tupul. Search and rescue operations are already underway.

“…As the situation is still evolving and the future remains unknown, the general public is advised to exercise their due diligence and especially ensure that children are not allowed to cross the river,” the Noni deputy commissioner’s statement said ought.” Do not come near.Anyone who can evacuate is advised to do so as well.

The public is also advised to remain vigilant and be ready for any assistance should the rainfall worsen.”

The statement advised travelers to avoid Route 37 due to several roadblocks.
