Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says 87 people were killed in last week’s attack on the town of Desna

Besides the Russian bombing of a cinema in Mariupol, Desna may have been the deadliest of any single strike during the war.

Desna is 55 kilometers (34 miles) north of Kiev. Zelenskyy said debris removal at Desna in the Chernihiv region had been completed and the deaths and destruction caused by just four missiles had been completed.

Zelenskyy made the comments in a Monday night speech on the eve of the three-month anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Since Feb. 24, the Russian military has launched 1,474 missile attacks on Ukraine using 2,275 different missiles,” he said.

The vast majority hit civilian targets and there have been more than 3,000 Russian airstrikes in that time, said Zelensky, who said Russia was waging a “total war” on his country and that included causing as many casualties and destroying infrastructure as possible.

At least 52 people were killed in a train station in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk in April.

Ukrainian authorities said they believed hundreds of people were trapped under the rubble of a theater in Mariupol after the March bombing, but they could not confirm the death toll.

Zelenskyy does not specify whether the casualties of the attack in Desna were military or civilian. There are military barracks and training bases near the town.

“Today we finished in Desna. Under the rubble, 87 people have died in Desna. 87 bodies,” Zelenskyy said Monday via a video link of a meeting of world business leaders in Davos.

Ukrainian authorities said last week that eight people had been killed in the strike. Reuters could not immediately verify the new toll.
