Made-in-India Dornier 228 made its first commercial flight from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh

A Dornier 228 aircraft manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) made its maiden commercial flight on 12 April from Dibrugarh in eastern Assam to Pasighat in central Arunachal Pradesh.

HAL has been manufacturing Dornier aircraft after the transfer of technology from its German-owned firm, but the Indian made aircraft was not used for civil aviation till now.

Public sector Alliance Air in February signed an agreement with HAL to lease two Dornier 228 aircraft. The airline had received two planes on 7 April.

“Very glad and proud to have a 17-seater Made-in-India Dornier 228 aircraft – in its maiden maiden service to Arunachal Pradesh!” Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia along with Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted after inaugurating the Dibrugarh-Pasighat flight.

“Alliance Air is the first airline to begin the journey of operating an aircraft made in India and contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative,” he said.

Alliance Air Coordinator (East) Chirasree Sanyal said the airline was tasked with providing better connectivity to Tier-II and Tier-III cities with their nearest city centers with a view to “connecting New India”.

Officials said the route connecting Dibrugarh to Pasighat and Lilabari (Assam) will start operating twice a week from April 18. The aircraft is capable of operating both day and night.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who flagged off the flight from Pasighat, said the short fixed-wing flight service will give a boost to tourism, making air travel affordable and accessible to all.
