The Meghalaya government on Friday took over land in the Punjabi Lane area in Shillong, which had hit headlines after group clashes three years ago, and decided that illegal settlers would be relocated from there, officials said.

The state cabinet took the decision earlier this week based on the recommendations of a High Level Committee (HLC) headed by Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tynsong.

Its secretary Gurjit Singh told PTI on Saturday, “The HPC, which has represented the interests of hundreds of Dalit Sikh families living in Them Lev Mawlong area or Punjabi Lane for the past several years, has rejected the report of the high-level committee. ”

Singh also said that his organization has vowed to “fight tooth and nail for the rights of the people living in the area till their last breath”.

“The 2.5-acre colony, located close to the state’s largest traditional market, serves as a lifeline for many families, who have set up shops and other businesses in the area.
