Telangana recorded the lowest unemployment rate of 0.7% in January, followed by Gujarat (1.2%), Meghalaya and Odisha (1.8%). However, Haryana had the highest unemployment rate at 23.4%, followed by Rajasthan at 18.9%.
India’s unemployment rate saw a sharp drop to 6.57% in January, the lowest since March 2021, according to CMIE, as the country gradually eases restrictions following a drop in Omicron cases.
While unemployment in urban India stood at 8.16% in January, it was lowest in rural areas at 5.84%.
In December, the unemployment rate in India was 7.91%, with urban at 9.30% and rural at 7.28%.

CMIE estimated the number of unemployed in India to be 53 million by December 2021, of whom a large proportion were women. It also said that 35 million people were actively looking for work in December 2021, of which 23% or 80 lakh were women. (PTI)
