Meghalaya rebel group warns people not to vote for ruling party in bypolls
The rebels have given the NPP a one-week ultimatum to shut down all its facilities in the Khasi and Jaintia hills.
The banned Hynñewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has urged the citizens of the state not to vote for the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in the by-elections for the three assembly seats to be held on October 30.
The rebels have given the NPP a one-week ultimatum to shut down all its facilities in the Khasi and Jaintia hills.
“We urge the people not to vote for the NPP in the by-elections in protest of the killing of Cherish Thankhu,” HRLC general secretary-spokesperson Saikupar Nantrao said in an email on Wednesday.
Thankheev, a former self-employed general secretary of HNLC, was allegedly shot dead in a police operation to arrest him from his home on the morning of August 13.
National teams come and go in Meghalaya, but none of them claim to be able to serve the people of the state, Nontro said, “I think national parties are like a rainbow alliance and they can never solve the problems facing the state.” “Therefore, we need our own regional team that can and does meet the aspirations of the people,” he said.
The leader of the organization further announced that the NPP has been directed to close all its offices in Khasi and Jaintia hill areas from today. “We’ll only have one week to finish the practice,” he warned.
Meanwhile, the HNLC police statement noted that an HNLC cadre named Emanuel Suchen had recently surrendered to Khalihariyat in the East Jaintia hill district as a “drama”.
“Six months ago, Suchen was arrested by police on charges of involvement in the IED blast. Even after he was released, the police repeatedly searched and raided him, threatening dire consequences, causing him to go underground and later surrender.

“Just because they failed to gather specific evidence in the IED case, state police resorted to randomly arresting innocent youths with former HNLC cadres as if they were chickens in a field, but arresting cadres is not easy. The organization. Such arrests only show that They (the police) have become like weak and drunk pigs with fermented corn, ”mocked Nontro.
