MHA to brief house panel about role and work of Assam Rifles
After reducing the area under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the North East by 75%, the Union Home Ministry will brief a parliamentary panel on May 25 on the role and activities of the Assam Rifles where… they are deployed .
This will be the first meeting since Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Abhishek Manu Singhvi was appointed as the chairman of the standing committee after the retirement of Congress leader Anand Sharma.

As part of the counterinsurgency grid, AR is also protected under the controversial AFSPA and has come under fire for its alleged abuse of power.
In April, the Union government was forced to relax AFSPA from 23 districts in Assam and partly from several parts of the northeast, including seven in Nagaland, six in Manipur and one in Manipur, following anger over a failed operation in Nagaland last year In Assam.
The Assam Rifles, one of the six Central Armed Police Forces under the administrative control of the Union Home Ministry, has a sanctioned strength of 66,412 personnel divided into 46 battalions.
However, its operational control rests with the Indian Army which reports to the Ministry of Defence. The AR, who is deployed in counter-insurgency roles in the North Eastern states, also guards the 1,631-km Indo-Myanmar border.

The Home Ministry is expected to provide details on the recruitment of women in the Assam Rifles during the talks with MPs. The number of women recruited in AR is said to be too low, for which the 33 per cent quota announced by the central government is mandatory.
According to MHA officials, the AR has been sanctioned to raise five additional battalions, which will be deployed in the insurgency-affected areas of the northeast. Two AR battalions and one NDRF battalion have been deployed in Jammu and Kashmir.
