Mizoram plans to vaccinate Myanmar refugees against Covid-19
Police said the majority of Myanmar citizens are living in relief camps set up by villagers, while others live in the state with their relatives and some in rented houses.
A health department official said on Thursday that the Mizoram government is planning to provide a COVID-19 vaccine to citizens of Myanmar, who have taken refuge in the state following a military coup in the neighboring country in February.
According to state police records, a total of 12,736 people from Myanmar are currently living in different parts of Mizoram, especially in the districts bordering that country.
Officials in those districts are gearing up to vaccinate all eligible refugees, the official said.
Champhai district of eastern Mizoram has the highest number of citizens of Myanmar at 7,291, followed by southern Lawangtlai district with 1,746 and state capital Aizawl with 1,622 citizens.
A large section of asylum seekers in the state belong to the Chin, also known as the Zo community. They share the same ancestry and culture as the Mizos of Mizoram. They were primarily residents of Chin, a state in Myanmar that shares its western border with Mizoram.

Officials said they are provided with food, utensils, blankets and other essential items by local people, NGOs and churches.
Earlier, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to provide asylum to Myanmarese citizens on humanitarian grounds. The state government had also sent a delegation to Delhi to help those people.
However, the Center has not yet given any reply. India is not a signatory to the United Nations Convention on Refugees.
Six Mizoram districts – Champhai, Lawangtlai, Siaha, Saitual, Hanahthiyal and Serchhip – share a 510-km international border with Myanmar’s Chin state.
