More than 25 thousand people reached Hornbill Festival in three days

Over 25,000 people have attended the Hornbill Festival of Nagaland in the Naga heritage village Kisama, 12 km from here, in the first three days of the fair, an official said.

Nagaland’s ongoing 10-day Hornbill Festival, an annual tourism promotional event of the state government, is being organized after a gap of one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 12,420 people visited on the opening day of the festival on Wednesday, while the number dropped to 7,191 on Thursday and 5,515 on Friday.

At least 2,090 domestic tourists and 35 foreigners visited the Hornbill festival in the first three days, a data provided by Toka E. Tukumi, Assistant Director of the Department of Tourism, said.

The performances of traditional hunting days by Konyak Nagas enthralled the audience in the afternoon session of cultural performances on Friday.

The Yah Lhapu performance of head hunts followed by a folk dance by the Longchang cultural troupe representing the Konyak tribe reflected the practice of the past.

The sudden loud sound from the firing of the muzzle-loading gun and the smoke coming out of the barrel attracted the noisy crowds of tourists and shouts from local visitors in the main area in Kisama.

The period of the head-hunting performance remained silent, with visitors conceiving the next action, but the traditional dance cursed the enemy, prompting visitors to join in in battle slogans and applaud the echoing troupe of the picturesque Naga Heritage Village.

Other performances for the session were: Ao Naga Vadir Yaar (Dance of the Naga Vadir), Phom Kyong-Nya-Yong (Beautiful Dance), Lotha Rice Bounding Folk Song, Khiamnyungan Po-Hoi Jihang (Dormitory Song), Garo Quarrel Dance and Chang kh ngkh n wanstyang (the traditional way of making fire).

Nagaland’s Minister of Planning and Coordination, Land Revenue, Neeba Kronu and Consultant Skill Development, Labor and Employment and CAWD Kazeto Kinimi hosted Friday’s session.
