Mount Harriet in Andaman to be renamed as Mount Manipur to pay tribute to freedom fighters
To pay homage to the freedom fighters of Manipur, the central government has decided to rename Mount Harriet, an island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
To pay homage to the freedom fighters of Manipur, the central government has decided to rename Mount Harriet, an island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It will now be known as Mount Manipur, officials said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the announcement while addressing a public event in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Saturday.
Shah said that Manipur played an important role in the resistance of the British during the revolution of 1857 and in the north-east in 1891. Manipur never gave up and the people there continued to fight. The state is the only state that implements its own constitution. Yuvraj Tikendrajit and General Thangal, the heroes of the Manipur war, were publicly hanged on the ransom of Imphal. The British felt that by crushing them they had crushed the independence movement but that did not happen. Maharaja Kulchandra Dhawaj Singh and 22 freedom fighters were then sent to Kalapani and placed on Mount Harriet. Today we would like to honor his contribution by naming Mount Harriet Mount Manipur in his memory.
Mount Harriet is the third highest peak in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where Maharaja Kulchandra Singh of Manipur and 22 other freedom fighters were taken prisoner during the Anglo-Manipuri War (1891).
The Center will also assist the Manipur government in constructing a memorial at Mount Manipur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Delighted to hear the news, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted, “Paying due homage to Maharaja Kulchandra and other Manipuri freedom fighters imprisoned in Kalapani, Hon’ble Shri Amit Amit Shah G. Mount Harriet. Name has been changed to Mount Manipur.” We are very grateful to Narendra Modi Jit and Amit Shahji for giving such great honor to our heroes. ”
In another tweet, Biren Singh said, “More Hon’ble HM Shri Amit Shah Ji has announced that the Central Government will assist Manipur in setting up a memorial at Mount Manipur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The process of signing a lease agreement between the Andaman Government and the Manipur Government is underway.”

“Nevertheless, Prime Minister Arenarendramodi G and HM mit AmitShah G most aptly acknowledged Manipur’s contribution to the freedom struggle, a seal of connection with our national history. Forever indeed, Manipur salutes your leadership. Thank you,” he said.
1 Man August During this year’s Patriotic Day in Manipur, the state government unveiled a monopoly dedicated to the incompetent heroes of the Anglo-Manipur War in 191. 21 names including Maharaja Kulchandra have been engraved in one color.
In February 200, the 1 Man member All Manipur Working Journalists Union visited Mount Harriet as part of its fifteen-day long journey to find a connection with the past and call on the then lieutenant governor to build a memorial.
