Mahila Morcha President S Phangnon Konyak has been nominated as the candidate for the election to Nagaland’s lone seat in the Upper House of Parliament.
Nagaland is likely to get a woman Rajya Sabha MP for the first time as a coalition of the NDPP and the BJP, with 35 MLAs in the 60-member assembly, has nominated the saffron party’s Mahila Morcha president S Phangnon Konyak as its candidate for the polls. . NPF general secretary and spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon told PTI that the Naga People’s Front held a meeting with 25 members on Saturday to decide whether to support Konyak or field its candidate, but it was inconclusive.
The party will hold another round of meetings on Sunday.
However, even if the NPF fields its candidate, the NDPP-BJP alliance has more MLAs and its candidate is likely to win.
Ms Konyak is yet to file her nomination.
Since Nagaland’s statehood in 1963, it has had only one woman MP, Rano M Shaja, who was elected to the Lok Sabha as an independent candidate in 1977. There has never been a woman legislator in the state assembly.
Returning officer for the election Khruhituonuo Rio said a candidate has to file nomination papers by 3 pm on Monday.
Rajya Sabha elections will be held on March 31 and the counting of votes will take place on the same day.
The term of the sitting member of the Upper House from Nagaland, KG Kane, ends on April 2.
Legislators in the 60-member assembly will participate in the Rajya Sabha elections as the members of the Upper House of Parliament are elected by the legislators in the state legislatures. It is an election through proportional representation.
The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and BJP had contested the 2018 state election together and won 21 and 12 seats respectively. He formed the government and got the support of two independent MLAs.

The NPF joined the ruling party in September last year and formed the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), an opposition-less government in the state.
Chief Minister and NDPP leader Neiphiu Rio said that the election of the BJP’s woman candidate is purely on party lines. “We have an alliance and the NDPP respects its alliance partner,” he told reporters.
