Nagaon SP Anand Mishra transferred to Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati
An order from the Home and Political Departments said that the Assam government has transferred Nagaon Superintendent of Police Anand Mishra to the Assam Police Headquarters here and given temporary charge of heading the police force in Nagaon district to an additional SP.
“In the interest of public service, Anand Mishra, Superintendent of Police, Nagaon is transferred and attached to Assam Police Headquarters, Ulubari till further orders. They are released with immediate effect,” said the notification signed by Neeraj Verma, state principal secretary (home and political department), and issued late Wednesday evening.
The order came after Mishra had addressed a media conference in Nagaon earlier in the day while accepting the recommendations of a report submitted by Additional Chief Secretary PK Barthakur following an inquiry into the firing by anti-narcotics squad police personnel at Kacholukhowa. On the night of 22 January, former AASU leader Kirti Kamal Bora was injured in Tiniali, Nagaon.
The former student leader had reportedly questioned the police why they were “beating up” Hussain, following which he was shot dead by police personnel of the Nagaon Anti-Narcotics Squad formed by Mishra.
The Nagaon SP, however, said in a media conference that the probe, which has now been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police, should also find out whether Kirti Kamal had links with drugs case accused Zakir Hussain. , “who has been chargesheeted under the NDPS Act.
“If Kirti Kamal Bora was innocent then why was he in a drug case or trying to save her during the operation? The investigation, which has been handed over to the CID, will unearth more details,” the SP had said, even as he warned that anyone involved in illegal drug trafficking would not be spared .
Meanwhile, Additional SP (HQ) Nagaon, Dhruba Bora has been given temporary charge (of the post of SP) to look after the present duties till further orders.
According to Kirti Kamal, the police had abused her and when she protested, she was dragged off her bike and beaten up before being shot. The incident created an uproar across the state, with pressure groups demanding a judicial inquiry.
Kirti Kamal (22) is presently admitted in Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
While the police allege that Kirti Kamal was involved in a drug racket and attacked policemen, her family claimed that she was “wrongly implicated”.
On Tuesday, the state home and political department directed Assam Police DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta to disband the current form of the anti-drug squad and suspend a sub-inspector immediately.
The move was based on the recommendations of a report submitted by the Additional Chief Secretary, after which the Chief Minister ordered an inquiry into the firing on January 23.
Meanwhile, Mishra informed the Assam Police Headquarters at Ulubari here on Thursday morning, even as he did not comment when journalists contacted him.
