Kohima: President Ram Nath Kobind on Monday conferred the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian award, on veteran politician and former Nagaland Chief Minister Dr SC Jamir at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
“President Kobind has presented the Padma Bhushan to Dr SC Jamir for public affairs. A veteran political leader and governor of many states, Dr. Jamir is one of the founders of Nagaland state, ”Rashtrapati Bhavan tweeted.

Jamir is the first politician from Nagaland to receive the Padma Bhushan award, which is recognized for his outstanding service to the public. The second person in the state to receive the Padma Bhushan after Queen Guidinleu, who was awarded “Social Work” in 1982.

Nagaland Chief Minister Nifiu Rio said on Twitter, “Congratulations to Dr. SC Jamir for being awarded the third highest civilian award #Padmabhushan, for his exceptional and distinguished service to the public. I wish you all the best in your endeavors. ”

Jamir met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8. “It was wonderful to meet Mr. SC Jamir, the former Chief Minister of Nagaland and a respected statesman. We exchanged views on various issues. I also have memories of working with him during his brief tenure as Governor of Gujarat in 2009, ”Modi tweeted.
Born on October 17, 1931, Dr. Jamir was first elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1971 and later served as Chief Minister four times. He was also the Governor of Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Orissa and was the first Member of the Lok Sabha from the State of Nagaland from 1961 to 1970.
