Police shot former student leader Assam announces investigation
“If we find out that the police have committed an offense, immediate action will be taken,” he said in a news conference in Guwahati.
Following anger at the shooting of a 22-year-old former student leader in the Nagaon district of Assam, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Bisva Sarma, announced on Sunday that a one-man incident commission was being chaired by the additional secretary general. The report must be submitted within seven days, Sarma said.
“If we find out that the police have committed an offense, immediate action will be taken,” he said in a news conference in Guwahati.
On Saturday night, Kirti Kamala Bora, a former secretary general at Nagaon College who was formerly a member of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), was injured in a drug-fighting operation in Nagaon’s Kachalukhua district when police shot him. “self – defense”. Bora, who suffered injuries to her left thigh, left arm and forehead, is currently being treated at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
Although police have claimed Bora was involved in a drug racket and attacked police, his family said he was “misrepresented.”
Police were arriving at the scene on Saturday night in civilian clothes on the advice that drugs were being sold in the Kachalukhua district of Nagaon. “Two of our men were there to check … then the people there got suspicious and they started questioning our men who said they were cops. Then there was chaos and a fight started,” said Anand Mishra of Nagaon SP, adding “There were two or four people trying to escape, so one police officer started harassing them. The other abandoned police officer was beaten by two others. According to his version, he was forced to shoot to escape, otherwise he would be killed.
Mishra claimed that Bora was among those who beat the police officer and was “involved in the incident”.
“That’s why he was hit by a bullet,” said the VP, adding that they had found eight vials of the drug from the scene, including one from Bora’s person. “We are now trying to find out if he was a consumer or a trader,” he said.
Bora’s family has condemned the police version and said he was “misrepresented”.
“On Saturday at around 7.30 pm my mother had sent him for medication. Ten minutes later, we heard a commotion at our house … I ran out and saw that my brother was on the road, and he was surrounded by 6 or 7 police officers, ”said Koustav, Bor’s older brother.
Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, the injured Bora said that while her mother was in the hall, she saw a person being beaten at her home. “I was just about to intervene when I was offended, I broke off the bike and was suddenly shot,” he claimed.
Bor’s brother said the family was in shock. “We never thought the police would do anything like that. The meeting has become a trend in Assam,” he said.

The opposition accused Chief Minister Sarma of urging the police to “cause happiness”. “Such incidents reveal the personality of Assamese police,” MLA Achilles Gogoi said, comparing the Sarma regime to a “jungle district.”
AASU has also condemned the incident. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya, AASU’s chief adviser, demanded a court investigation into the incident. Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and AASU held a huge rally in Nagaon to protest the incident.
Since taking office as Prime Minister, Sarma has emphasized a “zero-tolerance policy” against criminals, giving the police “full freedom of action under the law”.
Since May last year, more than 60 people have been injured and at least 30 have died as if trying to escape police custody.
Responding to criticism, Sarma said the Nagaon incident was being investigated and was not comparable to other police incidents where actual drug traffickers and criminals had been prosecuted. He said police officers involved in Saturday’s incident were now in reserve. “If convicted, action will definitely be taken,” he said.
