More than ten thousand people gathered in three districts of Barak Valley part of Assam on Monday to protest violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. Officials said they burnt Bangladesh’s national flag, attempted to cross the India-Bangladesh international border and called for a boycott of Bangladeshi products.
The protest was called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which was attended by members of several organizations including Bharat Sevaram Sangh, Shankar Math, Gauria Math, Bajrang Dal, the women’s wing of the RSS.
In Karimganj district, where the border is divided by the Kushiyara river, hundreds of protesters tried to cross it and go to Bangladesh. Whereas in Hailakandi, the national flag of Bangladesh was lit to mark the protest.
The protesters sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged the government to stop all trade with Bangladesh. He also alleged that Bangladesh is trying to evacuate Hindus and this act of violence is part of the same conspiracy.
Former MLA from Karimganj district and senior BJP leader Ranjan Das said, “If India cuts off all trade ties with Bangladesh, as we did with Pakistan in the past, the country will starve. Also, India is the largest consumer of Bangladesh’s food products. We are going to boycott every food product coming from Bangladesh. We have sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested him to send a strong message to Bangladesh so that Hindus living there do not face any more persecution.”
Karimganj BJP President Subrata Bhattacharya said, “Bangladesh has forgotten that India saved them from Pakistan and gave them the identity of an independent nation. Our army won the war against Pakistan in 1971 and if we wanted then the whole country would have been a part of India. People attacking Hindus in Bangladesh should understand that we can do this even today if needed.
After taking out a huge rally in Karimganj district, the protesters gathered on the banks of Kushiyara and suddenly some people jumped into the river. “We are going to Bangladesh to protect the Hindus there,” he said. However, they were stopped by the Border Security Force and requested not to do so again.
In Cachar district, the rally started from Subhash Nagar Maidan and thousands of protesters gathered in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

VHP’s Purna Chandra Mandal said, “It has been proved that the Quran was placed along with the idol of Durga by a Muslim man in the Kumila pandal. Nevertheless, more than 200 pandals in 30 districts of Bangladesh were vandalized by Muslims. The ISKCON temple, where there was no Durga Puja, was attacked and devotees were killed. This is part of a conspiracy to expel Hindus from Bangladesh. If this continues, we will enter the territory of Bangladesh in large numbers for the safety of our brothers and sisters.”
He appealed to the Muslims in India to oppose the acts of violence in Bangladesh. He said, “…if they don’t condom the act of violence in Bangladesh, we will assume they are supporting it. It’s time to make it clear that we are not going to act like hypocrites. Violence. There will be violence against.”
Mrinmayanand Maharaj of Bharat Sevaram Sangh, Vigyanand Maharaj of Shankar Math, Shantanu Naik of Abhaycharan Krishna Gauria Math, VHP also spoke during the protests in Silchar.
Meanwhile, some other leaders also raised their voice against the violence in Bangladesh and also questioned the Indian government for remaining mute spectators.
