Putin called himself the modern Peter the Great in the midst of the Ukraine war
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday compared his current actions to Peter the Great’s conquest of the Baltic coast during his 18th-century war against Sweden.
After visiting an exhibition in Moscow dedicated to the 350th birthday of tsar Peter the Great, Putin told a group of young entrepreneurs that “you get the impression that by fighting Sweden he is grabbing something. He is not taking anything, he is taking it. Back”.

When Peter the Great founded Saint Petersburg and declared it the capital of Russia “none of the countries in Europe recognized this region as belonging to Russia,” Putin said.
“Everyone considers it part of Sweden. But since time immemorial, the Slavs have lived there with the Finno-Ugric people,” the Russian leader added.
“It is also our responsibility to take back and strengthen,” Putin said, in clear reference to the Russian attack on Ukraine.
“Yes, there were times in the history of our country we had to retreat, but only to regain strength and move forward,” he said.
Sweden’s defeat in the Great Northern War (1700-1721) made Russia a major power in the Baltic Sea and an important player in European affairs.

But with Russia’s ties with the West now shattered by the Ukrainian invasion, Moscow authorities downplayed Peter’s ties to Europe and focused on his role in expanding Russian territory.
More than three centuries after he sought to bring Russia closer to Europe, Russia on Thursday marked the 350th anniversary of tsar Peter the Great with the country isolated in the Ukraine conflict.
Peter I ruled first as tsar and then as emperor from 1682 until his death in 1725.
