US claims Russia is struggling to find more troops to fight in Ukraine
In early August, the US Under Secretary of Defense estimated that 70–80,000 Russians had been killed or wounded in Ukraine since the February 24 invasion.
Russia is struggling to find more troops to fight in Ukraine, even exploiting prisons, and many of the new recruits are out of date, in poor condition and lack training, a senior American Defense official said on Monday.

The official referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decree last Thursday that increased the country’s military numbers by about 10 percent to 1.15 million from January next year.
The official said that after suffering significant setbacks and heavy military losses in the six months after invading Ukraine, the Pentagon believes “this effort is unlikely to succeed, as Russia has historically The personnel and strength targets have not been met.”
“Russia has already begun trying to expand recruitment efforts,” the official told reporters on the basis of anonymity.
“They have also done this by eliminating the upper age limit for fresh recruits and recruiting prisoners,” the official said.
“Many of these new recruits have been seen as old, unqualified and poorly trained,” the official said.

According to the official, the Pentagon’s conclusion is that more recruits may not be able to effectively expand overall combat power until the end of the year.
The official said that even before the war, Russia’s armed forces could be 150,000 less than its stated target of one million.
