Russia launches new strikes near nuclear plant, Ukraine says
Ukraine and Russia each charged Sunday with attacks near Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, amid ongoing international concern that the facility itself could be hit and cause a radiation leak.
Russia launched new rocket and artillery strikes near the facility early Sunday, with Ukrainian officials reporting significant damage.
Ukraine’s Valentin Reznichenko, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, said heavy firing during the night left parts of Nikopol without electricity, about 10 kilometers from the nuclear site. Rocket attacks damaged about a dozen homes in another nearby town, Marhanettes.

Despite the attacks, International Atomic Energy Agency director general Rafael Mariano Grossi said Ukraine had told him “all security systems are in place and there has been no increase in radiation levels.”
Grossi said Ukraine reported that all radioactivity measurements were within normal limits and that there was no sign of a hydrogen leak. Officials are particularly concerned about the cooling system for the plant’s nuclear reactors. A failure of the cooling system can cause a nuclear meltdown.
Iodine tablets have been given to residents living near the Zaporizhzhya plant in case of radiation exposure.
The city of Zaporizhzhya, about 40 kilometers above the nuclear facility, was also attacked, city council member Anatoly Kurtaev said, adding that two people were injured.
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov claimed on Sunday that shells fired by Ukraine’s military landed near buildings that store reactor fuel and radioactive waste.
The US State Department accused Russia of blocking a consensus document on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty because the agreement referred to risks posed by fighting near the Zaporizhzhya plant.

The statement said, “For the Russian Federation not to accept such language in the face of overwhelming international consensus, the United States and others have been asked by Russia to end its military activity with the ZNPP and control of the plant to Ukraine.” The urge to return underscores the need to continue.” ,
Grossi said continued shelling near the plant remains a risk, with both Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of shelling near the facility. The plant has been controlled by Russia since the start of the six-month offensive, but is operated by Ukrainian engineers.
Grossi said he is in discussions with Ukraine and Russia in the coming days to allow IAEA experts to assess any damage from weeks of shelling near the plant and whether all of its systems are working. have been
Lana Jarkal, adviser to Ukraine’s energy minister, said the IAEA, a UN agency, is expected to visit the site this week.
Moscow said it supports the IAEA’s work but has refused to remove its troops from the compound to create a demilitarized zone.

An engineer who has been working under Russian occupation since March 4 at the Zaporizhzhia Power Plant told VOA that Russian forces have placed artillery and missile installations in and around the property.
The engineer, whose identity is being withheld by the occupation authorities for fear of reprisal, supports the Ukrainian government’s claims that Russia itself is responsible for the blasts.
In his nightly address to the nation, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to retake separatist territories occupied since the invasion of Russia began six months ago.
“Now the Donbass is almost devastated, devastated by Russian attacks,” he said. “The proud and proud Ukrainian Donetsk was humiliated and plundered by Russian occupation. Russia brought there the most terrible thing – complete disregard for the value of any life, complete disrespect for anyone. … And they believe —that they are there forever. But it is a temporary thing for them. And Ukraine will be back. Certainly.”
