Russia strikes at Sievierodonetsk chemical plant in eastern Ukraine
Russian forces bombed a chemical plant in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sivirodonetsk on Sunday, sheltering hundreds of soldiers and civilians, but the Luhansk regional governor said the plant was under Ukrainian control.
The governor, Sergei Haidai, called it a “lie” by pro-Russian separatists that 300 to 400 Ukrainian troops were stranded with hundreds of civilians at the Azot facility.
“Only shots are being fired in the area of the plant,” Haidai said. “On the outskirts of the city, fighting is going on in the streets directly near the plant.” He said a large fire broke out in the factory on Saturday during the Russian shelling.

Russia claims control of 97% of Luhansk province. But the capture of the industrial city of Siviarodonetsk, with a pre-war population of 100,000, is crucial to Moscow’s larger goal of controlling the eastern Donbass region, which surrounds the Luhansk and Donetsk provinces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video speech on Saturday night that no one knows how long the war with Russia will last, but said Ukrainian forces had already denied a preliminary assessment that Russia would quickly occupy eastern Ukraine. Will focus. The fall of Zelensky during the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February or the capture of the capital Kyiv.
Russia occupied the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine in 2014, and Kiev’s forces have been fighting pro-Russian separatists in the Donbass region ever since.
Leonid Pasechenik, head of the separatist-declared Luhansk People’s Republic, acknowledged that “Sivirodonetsk is not 100% free. Therefore, it is impossible to say that the situation in Sivirodonetsk is calm, that it is entirely ours.”

“Remember how in Russia, in early May, they expected to occupy all the Donbass?” The President said. “This is already the 108th day of the war, already June. The Donbas are still holding on.”
But Siviarodonetsk’s fight is difficult for Ukraine. Russian forces control much of the city, and Haidai says they have destroyed a second bridge in the city to cut off Ukraine’s ability to send reinforcements. He predicted that Russia would “throw all their stockpiles to occupy the city” in the next day or two and take control of an important highway, which is an important supply route.
“According to our estimates,” he told Current Time, the Russian-language channel is operated by RFE / RL in collaboration with VOA. “Russia still has the potential to wage a long-term war against Ukraine.”
Vadim Skibitsky, deputy head of Ukraine’s main intelligence service, said Russia had extended its war plan for another four months, until the end of October.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency said: “The Russian people have had great success in achieving just cause for the dignity and security of their country, enduring all kinds of challenges and hardships.”

Although Russia has already claimed huge control of the Luhansk region, a senior U.S. defense official said Saturday that Moscow could take control within a week.
Skibitsky said Russia could maintain the current level of fighting for at least another year without the need to build more weapons. “The situation is very difficult because the Russians have significant advantage over the weapons they have,” he added.
North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un on Sunday expressed full support for Russia’s aggression.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Kyiv to discuss Ukraine’s EU candidacy, which Zelensky called “the final stage of a major diplomatic marathon.” A recommendation from Ukraine’s EU status commission is expected this week.
